October 5th, 2010 City-County Championship @ Durham Academy 70 and nice with a breeze 5000 meters
Boys’ Results (42 runners in Varsity / 80 in Junior Varsity)
Score:
18:04 average; 18:23 average in 2009
Team Stats: 1-5 Gap: 55 seconds (This
is a poor gap in a championship race) The top 7 actually ran the times I thought you could; however, the top 7 didn’t run the races I thought you would or should. I’m not sure what you guys believe in – but I’m not convinced you truly believe in yourselves. There was one personal best today – ONE out of 27!!!! In 2007, we scored 65 points, in 2008 we scored 68 points, in 2009 we scored 77 points and in 2010 we scored 71 points. I can’t say I’m pleased with the trend. I take full responsibility for the decline in overall performance. I understand what we’re not doing correctly and unfortunately it can’t be fixed in August, September or October and it is DISTANCE RUNNING. Improvements have been made in the off-season training and that is why you guys are running faster than in the previous seasons. Every single guy ran faster today than a year ago and that is progress. However, the gap from the top teams is growing and not shrinking. We have not been close to winning the Blunt Cup in years. We must reinvent ourselves in the off-season. Although we took home the Cullen Cup (which is awarded to the best program in Durham), I am not excited or even pleased about the performances of late. You are either improving or on the decline. Decide which direction you are going and fully commit to it. Do not accept anything less than your greatest efforts; also, do not accept anything less than your teammates’ greatest efforts. This is the time to push yourselves and push your teammates to excel. We have another championship to win two weeks from now – believe it. |
